GUARDIANS 2008 INLET PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION

Prize winning entries in the Inlet Guardians’ 2008 Photographic Competition, together with those ranked Highly Commended by judge Geoff Marshall of Kapiti Camera Club, will be on display in Whitby Mall from Saturday 15 March. The display will continue in the Mall over Easter weekend.

‘We received a pleasing 196 entries in total, from 45 competitors,’ reports competition co-ordinator Ken Rae, secretary of GOPI. ‘We had 8 entrants in our Youth section, those under 18 years. Our new Junior section, for those under 13, attracted just 3 pioneer entrants. We’ll hope to build on this in our next competition.’

‘Numbers were down on last year’s record entry,’ comments Ken Rae, ‘but they surpassed all our other years. As indicated by our judge’s comments, however, the quality of prints submitted was definitely up.’

Geoff Marshall in his helpful notes to be circulated to all competitors comments, ‘The high number of entries in the ‘youth’ category, and the high overall quality are very encouraging. They are a compliment to all the people that went to the effort of taking photographs for this competition.

‘It’s good to see,’ he continued, ‘a lot of people using the ‘magic light’ that occurs early in the morning and late in the evening. I hope the entrants continue to get out and enjoy the beauty of the Pauatahanui Inlet, an area which we are lucky to live near and have easy access to, and to make compelling images of the Inlet.’

Those visiting the display will note that entries came from as far afield as Taupo and not just from those living close to the Inlet. The display will move to the Library in Pataka from Thursday 27 March, and then to Palmer’s Lifestyle Centre, Plimmerton from 5 to 14 April. All prizewinning prints will be put up on the Guardians website, www.gopi.wellington.net.

The Guardians are grateful for the continuing support for the competition from generous local business sponsors, and from the Creative Communities Fund of Porirua City Council. Vouchers will be in the mail to the lucky prize winners from 17 March. The full prize list is as follows.
