INLET GUARDIANS TO REPORT ON AN ACTIVE YEAR

The Guardians of Pauatahanui Inlet will report on an active twelve months of promoting community activity to care for the Inlet, at their Annual General Meeting on 26 June. The meeting will convene in the Bradey Room next to the Whitby Library at 7.30pm. Members of the public are cordially invited to attend.

After presentation by Chair John Wells of the annual report and the election of office holders and committee for the next twelve months, Jim Dearsly, recently retired Chair of the Whitby Residents Association has been invited to speak to the meeting.

‘Jim Dearsly is noted for his willingness to speak out on matters concerning the Inlet,’ says John Wells, ‘and he is known as an interesting and lively speaker. We value his concern for the Inlet and its place in the values of Whitby as a place to live, as well as his concern for its ecology.’

Among the highlights of the Guardians’ year was the planting along the Camborne Walkway, a day’s work completed by 11.30am because of the numbers that turned out. The Guardians have been advised by Porirua City Council that a further opportunity is likely in August of this year.

For the third year in a row the October Inlet Clean Up day was marked by atrocious weather. This however did not affect the turnout, which included several family groups linked to the Australian High Commission, and teams were able to be sent to all sectors of the Inlet and the job completed on the day.

The Guardians’ committee was pleased that the triennial Cockle Count in November was equally well supported, school and business groups in advance supplementing the major community effort on the day. Results have been forwarded to Greater Wellington and to NIWA, to maintain this record of the Inlet’s health that goes back now over twenty years.

‘We have a vacancy on the Committee,’ says John Wells. ‘We have valued the contribution of two of our new members through the last twelve months. Julian Powell of Camborne has taken up the Treasurer’s duties, and Ian Thompson, also of Camborne, has taken over co-ordination of the stream monitoring programme from our stalwart of many years, Alastair Harray of Motukaraka Point.’

‘If you would like to join the committee,’ writes John Wells in the society’s recent newsletter, ‘phone me at 234-1788 for more information, or simply for a chat.’
