HUGE RESPONSE TO GUARDIANS' PHOTO COMPETITION
'The response to the 2007 Photographic Competition was quite simply stunning,' says Guardians' Secretary and Photo Competition Co-ordinator Ken Rae. 'There were seventy entrants and 271 prints submitted - significantly up on 2006 when there were thirty entrants and 130 prints.' He is very grateful for the support and team work of his fellow committee members Priscilla Isaacs, Miles Deck and Alastair Harray, who were assisted in the mounting of the display by Tony Shaw.
'The standard was set', he comments, 'by the very first print received from Alan Wickens of Redwood Village Tawa, a picture of The Overlander reflected in the Inlet waters as it crossed the rail bridge at Paremata, which won him a Highly Commended from our judge Geoff Marshall of the Kapiti Camera Club. And the very last entries received and coded before consideration by the judge, from Kevin Corrin of Whitby, won him a First Prize and a Highly Commended in the Nature Section.'
The Guardians are very pleased at the number of entrants qualifying for the Youth Awards in each section, nineteen in total. Publicity was delivered to local secondary schools. An approach from Mana College resulted in five entries delivered by the Sixth Form photography tutor, for two Highly Commended awards.
The biggest winner on the day was undoubtedly Adele Lambie of Whitby. She was placed second in the Nature Section and again in the Human Impact Section, and picked up the Youth Award in each. In year 12 at Chilton St James she was introduced to the camera only last year as a result of part time work assisting a professional photographer.
Her winning photos were taken on a walk early on a Saturday morning at the urging of a young brother who wished to enter the competition. Her prints are notable for their special lighting effects, and the dynamic angle that highlights in one case the feather of an Inlet bird, and in the other the bottle discarded by an uncaring human visitor.
Competition Judge Geoff Marshall commented that 'the overall standard is very encouraging and the high number of entries is a compliment to all the people who went to the effort of taking photographs for this competition.' It is his wish that 'entrants continue to get out and enjoy the beauty of the Pauatahanui Inlet, an area which we are all lucky to live near and have easy access to, and to make compelling images of the Inlet.'
The Guardians are very grateful also for the support of the local sponsors. Once again there was an increase over last year, with the extra bonus of free printing offered by Harvey Norman in Porirua. This extra support will result in all prize winners receiving vouchers in excess of the advertised amounts.
The prize winning prints and the Highly Commended entries as selected by the judge are on display in Whitby Mall 17-25 March, Porirua City Library in Pataka 26 March - 1 April and Palmers Lifestyle Centre in Plimmerton 2 - 8 April.
