GUARDIANS LAUNCH NEW CALL FOR COMMUNITY
VOLUNTEERS
The Guardians of Pauatahanui Inlet have committed themselves to providing
further opportunities each year for community volunteers to care in
new ways for the Inlet and its environs. The first new project, a stream
bank planting programme, is scheduled to commence this coming weekend.
'At its first meeting last month,' reports John Wells, Chair of GOPI,
' the new committee agreed that it would adopt at least one new project
a year. I am therefore very pleased to advise that we have accepted
of an invitation from Greater Wellington to take part in the planting
of a planned 1500 trees and grasses on the banks of the Horokiri Stream,
starting this coming Saturday, 27 August.'
'These plantings will improve the quality of the water flowing into
the Inlet and Alistair Harray of the GOPI Committee has accepted the
task of coordinating the gathering of the volunteers required for this
important new venture.'
The planting will take place between 9am to 12 noon and again 1 pm
to 4pm. To join in this activity, volunteers should contact Alistair
Harray on 233 6648, or join up by email to mary.et.al@actrix.co.nz.
Volunteers will receive full details of the 27 August rendezvous, including
a map to the site at the Mitchell farm, which is a little way up the
Paekakariki Hill Road.
'We regret that notice is short, but past experience suggests there
are willing volunteers looking for opportunities like this,' said John
Wells. ' By taking part they will help us build on the ongoing success
of our stream monitoring programme, now in its third year, and on the
cockle count activities which have provided data allowing comparisons
of the health of the Inlet stretching back over thirty years.'
