Pauatahanui Inlet now has two organisations dedicated to care for it. The Guardians of Pauatahanui Inlet was formed in 1991. It is an incorporated society with membership open to all, and a committee. GOPI's aims are promotional, educational and hands on (e.g. the Clean up and cockle counting), as well as working with other organisations to help look after the inlet.
The Pauatahanui Inlet Community Trust (PICT) is a charitable trust, set up in May 2002 with up to 14 appointed members from a wide balance of interests. PICT's aim is to promote and help implement the Inlet Action Plan, which was prepared to achieve enhanced management of the inlet in all areas (e.g. harbour activities, catchment and roading).
