Pauatahanui Inlet Action Plan
Pauatahanui Inlet is the only large estuarine wetland left in the lower half of the North Island of New Zealand and is at risk mainly from human activities in its catchment. The Guardians of Pauatahanui Inlet (Guardians) was established in 1991 as an incorporated society to promote the recognition of the ecological, recreational and cultural values of the inlet.

Submission on the bill proposing changes to the RMA
With the Government proposing changes to the Resource Management Act that threaten to undermine efforts to protect the environment, it is important for community and environmental organisations to act quickly and decisively. While GOPI supports certain provisions of the Resource Management (Simplifying and Streamlining) Amendment Bill 2009, we are totally opposed to provisions that will reduce the community's participation in the decision-making process and reduce the quality of that decision making. Read our submission.

2007 Cockle Survey
The NIWA report on the triennial cockle count held in November 2007 shows that the total cockle population is similar to that recorded in 2004. The report is an attractive document with new features and good use of colour and provides an accessible summary of the findings of three decades. Copies have been lodged with Porirua Library, and with the relevant officers of PICT, GW and PCC. Read our summary of the surveys carried out since 1976.

The AGM will be held on Thursday, 25 June at 7.30 p.m. in the Bradey Room (next door to the Library at the Whitby shopping centre). Keith Calder, the Porirua Harbour Strategy Coordinator, will speak on 'Porirua Harbour and Catchment - People, Problems and Prospects'. This promises to be a very interesting discussion of relevance to everyone interested in the Inlet.
