Pauatahanui Inlet Action Plan
Pauatahanui Inlet is the only large estuarine wetland left in the lower half of the North Island of New Zealand and is at risk mainly from human activities in its catchment. The Guardians of Pauatahanui Inlet (GOPI) was established in 1991 as an incorporated society to promote the recognition of the ecological, recreational and cultural values of the inlet.

2008 AGM
Come along to the AGM on Thursday 26 June at 7.30pm in the Bradey Room, Whitby (next door to the Library at the shopping centre). You will be very welcome. Following presentation of the annual report and election of officers and committee, we will be addressed by Jim Dearsly. Jim has recently retired from a long stint as Chairperson of the Whitby Residents Association and is known as an interesting and lively speaker.

We have a vacancy on the committee. If you would like to join the committee phone John Wells at 234-1788 for more information. Nominations can be made from the floor at the AGM.

Wind farm policy
We asked our members for their views on wind farms around the Inlet and have formulated a policy based on responses to our survey.

You can read the survey results and the policy that we have developed. We're confident that the policy reflects our members' views.

ECO Conference
This year's ECO Conference is being held in Wellington from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 June. Keep an eye on ECO's website for programme details.

Cockle count
The triennial cockle count was held on Sunday 11 November 2007. We had an excellent response, showing that the community spirit is strong in those who live around and/or care about the inlet. See the November committee meeting notes for more information. Also read about the cockles and why we survey them. NIWA is currently analysing the data - the report will appear on this website as soon as it's available. Preliminary analysis suggests that the result will be much the same as in 2004. The stability of the population size seen since 1992 is apparently being maintained.
